Best Practices
Before starting a recording session in iDub, please check the tips below to make sure your surrounding environment is suitable for recording.
- Choose the quietest room of your home (evaluating outdoor and indoor noises).
- Make sure all noisy equipment is turned off or as far away from the mic as possible (A/C, Fan Coils, Dishwashers, External HD fans, etc)
- Close all the doors and windows.
- Avoid corners and reflective surfaces – do not stay too close to the walls.
- Blankets and pillows next to the back walls may help to reduce early reflections.
- Large bookshelves filled with books will provide good sound diffusion, so position yourself so that it stays behind your back. You should maintain at least 1.5m distance between your back and the bookshelf.
- Check for squeaky floors.
- If you are in a seated position, make sure your chair and desk do not produce sound when moving back and forth. Also, consider covering your desk with a blanket or a thick cloth to reduce sound reflections.
- Install a pop filter at a distance of 4-5cm from the microphone (not parallel to the membrane).
- Start with a distance of 15-20cm between the microphone and your mouth.
- Prior to proceeding with the recording session, the recording engineer will provide suggestions on how to improve the setup after checking initial audio samples.
1. Adjusting Input Volume
Set the volume for the input device being used to maximum in system settings to allow precise sound control for engineers.
If you are using a Mac, go to System Preferences > Sound and set the Input volume to max.
If you are using Windows, select the Start button, then select Settings and set the Volume to max.
2. Microphone Access for Windows OS
If you are using Windows, turn on microphone access for iDub in Settings.
💡 | Go to Settings > Privacy > Microphone and turn on access. |
3. Receiving Assignment
iDub is integrated with a project management system, MSX. When a task is assigned to you, you will receive an email notification from MSX. Once you receive this notification you will be able to access your assignment from iDub. If you do not have an account already, you will need to create an account on MSX before using iDub.
4. Using iDub
4.1 Sign in
Open iDub (idub.uat.msxcloud.com) on your Chrome browser. Enter your credentials and sign in.
💡 | Make sure you are using Chrome browser in Mac OS or Windows OS. |
💡 | If you are trying to sign in with an employee account with iyuo-sdi.com domain, you must use MS login. |
4.2 Security reminder
Whenever you sign in, you will need to give your consent for the security reminder.
4.3 My projects
Once you are signed in, My Projects will be displayed listing all the projects you are assigned to.
💡 | You can change the page layout using the Change View button. |
4.4 Project search
You can enter a Project ID or a Title into the search bar to look for a project.
4.5 Opening a project
You can open any of the assigned projects by clicking on it. However, you will not be able to join the recording session until a host—an engineer—is present. When an engineer enters the project, an ‘Active Now’ indicator will light up to show that the recording session is active.
💡 | It takes approximately 30 seconds for the indicator to light up after an engineer enters the project. |
4.6 Access denied
If you try to access a project that is missing a rate card or the due date on MSX, an error message will be displayed. If you see this message, you will need to contact the user who assigned the project to you so that they can set the rate card and the due date.
4.7 Unsupported frame rate
If the video selected for the project uses a frame rate that is not supported by the application, the project will be inaccessible.
4.8 Watermarking
If you access a project for the first time, iDub will start generating a unique watermark for your video. Once the watermark is generated, you will be able to join the session.
💡 | If you leave the watermarking prompt on, you will join the session automatically once the watermark has been generated. |
Watermarked videos are retained in the system for 6 weeks. After the retention period, watermarked videos are deleted and will need to be generated again.
4.9 iDub Connect
iDub Connect is a local audio managing application for Fetch feature in iDub (Web).
When entering the project, iDub will check whether iDub Connect is installed. If it isn’t installed, you will be redirected to My Projects and iDub Connect installation window will appear.
💡 | The latest version of iDub Connect: For Windows 1.0.8, For Mac 1.0.17 |
Download and install iDub Connect.
If you are using Windows OS, click More Info and then click Run anyway to proceed the installation.
When entering a project after installation, a prompt will appear checking whether to open iDub Connect. Click Open iDub Connect to proceed.
If iDub Connect is not the latest version, you will be redirected to My Projects and iDub Connect installation window will appear.
4.10 Initialization
Before you can join a session, iDub will need to initialize.
💡 | If the initialization progress is too slow or gets stuck, check to make sure that the network connection is stable. |
If there is no engineer present, you will be asked to remain in the lobby until an engineer enters the project.
If you haven’t allow iDub to access your microphone, an alert message will appear. Make sure to allow it to join the session.
4.11 Audio settings
You can change an input and output audio device in Settings at the bottom left.
4.12 Buffering
In order for video playback to stay in sync with the engineer’s device, occasional buffering will occur. During buffering, playback will be disabled.
4.13 Latency
You can check the quality of your current connection at the top right corner.
4.14 Talkback
While you are in a session, talkback is active at all times. Using the talkback, you can communicate with all the participants freely.
You can mute or unmute yourself by clicking the mute button at the top right corner.
4.15 Level meter
The level meter on the right can be used to check the level of the voice actor’s microphone.
4.16 Recording mode (solo/group)
iDub has two different recording modes: solo and group. In solo recording mode, you and the other voice talents are not able to hear each other talk. In group recording mode, all voice talents are allowed to hear each other speak, so that the performance can be coordinated accordingly.
4.17 Volume adjustment
Use the slider on the left side of the playback bar to adjust the video playback volume.
💡 | Microphone volume is controlled from engineer’s iDub. Do not adjust your microphone gain. |
4.18 Session timeout
If you are inactive for more than 30 minutes, a message will show up. To stay signed in, click continue. Otherwise, you will be signed out.
4.19 Troubleshooting
If there are any issues using the software, you can click on i icon next to the project name to view the debugging information. When requesting for technical assistance the information should be provided.
4.20 Sign out
To sign out, click on the Sign Out button in profile circle.
